The Sweetest Gift
What is love?
In 2000, my son, Ian, was 18. One night, I popped my head into his room to say “good night”, but discovered he was already sleeping. I remember sighing and smiling as I thought about the wonderful person he is. My heart broke a little about what a tough place the world is and I thought, in that moment, that I had not been a parent worthy of this amazing young person. Being a mother (and now a grandmother), grounds me and gives my life purpose. The next day, I heard the song The Sweetest Gift by Sade, for the first time. As I listened, my heart was filled with love and hope for his future.
Quietly while you were asleep
The moon and I were talking
I asked that she'd always keep you protected
She promised you her light
That you so gracefully carry
You bring your light and shine like morning
And then the wind pulls the clouds across the moon
Your light fills the darkest room
And I can see the miracle
That keeps us from falling
She promised all the sweetest gifts
That only the heaven's could bestow
You bring your light and shine like morning
And as you so gracefully give
Her light as long as you live
I'll always remember this moment

Now almost 20 years later, on Friday nights, my grandson stays over, and as I read with him as he falls asleep, my heart sings with gratitude for the lives and the loves that have found their way into our family: Ian’s incredible wife, Stephanie, and as mentioned above, our dear, clever, curious and passionate grandson, Cameron; our lovely and heartful daughter, Ashlie, her wonderful husband, Marc, and our family’s youngest, sweetest gift, Hunter.
We had a fabulous February at 3 Squares Cottage. Work and watching the grandkids grow has put me a little behind on blog posts, but onward now… here we go! We hope your February was filled with love, good food, great friends and the hope of spring! Here’s a look at the pinks and reds that festooned the cottage during the month of love.
Note: Over the years, our kitchen has been filled with love and ceramic hearts, bowls, cups, plaques with solid life advice ad characters created by Ben Behunin at Wild Rooster Artworks. We love them and think you will, too: https://potterboy.com/product-category/pottery/just-love-hearts/
All the best to you and yours! XOXO, Kari
